Regina King’s directorial debut stood out at this year’s Venice film festival. There’s the intriguing subject matter: it’s an adaptation of Kemp Powers’s dramatisation of a real-life meeting between Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke after Clay’s surprise win over Sonny Liston in February 1964. But there’s another reason: it’s the first film directed by an African-American woman to be selected in the festival’s history.

Despite the tumultuous climate in Cuba, the celebration and recognition of its Afro-Cuban population should not be any less celebrated. The enslaved African people in Cuba have a rich and heroic history of fighting against the Spanish who once enslaved them with the tools that the Spanish had put in their hands. It seems that the heat around the death of George Floyd has died down. however, I believe that what happened still needs to be discussed. George Floyd was killed on Thursday 25th of May by police officers. The officers used unnecessary force against him which caused his death.

The message is not violence. The message is the natural reaction to inaction.

It’s easy to believe that in the 21st century that issues such as slavery are far behind us. In reality, many of these enslaved African people and colonies were only freed around 100 years ago. Despite anti-slavery movements and the Emancipation Act, slavery was certainly not over in 1833.
